If you're following a low carb diet, you're probably already aware of the importance of protein-rich foods for your health and weight loss goals. But have you considered adding bone broth to your diet? Bone broth is a nutrient-dense and delicious drink that can provide numerous health benefits, especially when you're limiting your carb intake. Here are some of the reasons why bone broth is the perfect low carb superfood.

Rich in Protein and Nutrients

One of the primary benefits of bone broth is its high protein content. Bones and connective tissues are rich in collagen, a protein that is essential for maintaining healthy skin, hair, nails, and joints. Collagen is also a building block for other proteins, such as elastin and keratin. When you simmer bones in water for an extended period of time, the collagen breaks down into gelatin, which is also a protein source. This means that bone broth is an excellent source of protein, without the added carbs and sugars found in many protein powder based drinks.

In addition to protein, bone broth is also rich in other important nutrients, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. These minerals are essential for maintaining healthy bones, muscles, and organs.

Promotes Gut Health and Immune System

Bone broth is also beneficial for gut health and the immune system. The gelatin in bone broth contains amino acids that can help heal the lining of the gut, which can become damaged from a high-carb and processed food diet. A healthy gut is essential for overall health, as it is responsible for digesting and absorbing nutrients, as well as for supporting the immune system.

Bone broth also contains anti-inflammatory compounds, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, which can help reduce inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is a common problem in many high carb diets, as they often rely on high amounts of grains, refined carbs, sugars and vegetable oils. By adding bone broth to your diet, you can help reduce inflammation and support a healthy immune system.

Supports Weight Loss

If you're trying to lose weight on a low carb diet, bone broth can be a helpful addition to your meal plan:
  • Drinking bone broth before meals can help reduce your appetite and prevent overeating, which can lead to weight loss.
  • Bone broth is an excellent way to become adjusted to intermittent fasting, as it will help line your stomach and reduce feelings of hunger, without eating a full meal
  • Bone broth often contains important electrolytes, which are needed on a low carb diet

In addition, bone broth contains glycine, an amino acid that can help improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. This means that bone broth can help support healthy blood sugar levels, which is important for weight loss and overall health.

How to Make Bone Broth

Making bone broth is easy and affordable. Simply simmer bones (beef, chicken, pork, etc.) in water for several hours, along with vegetables, herbs, and spices of your choice. Strain the broth, and store it in the fridge or freezer. You can drink it plain or use it as a base for soups and stews. You can scrape off the fat to use in cooking, or let it melt into the broth when you reheat.
